About University of Minnesota Twin Cities

The university was founded in 1851, on February 25, but due to financial problems and the starting of the American Civil War, it did not begin to enroll students until 1867, when it was reopened, with the help of John Sargent Pillsbury, also known as the Father of the University, who gave the university a sizable loan.

U of M has 2 campuses, both of them located in Minnesota, in St. Paul and Minneapolis, and it is known as being the largest and the oldest part of University of Minnesota system, also having the 4th largest student enrollment in USA, estimated at a number of over 50 000 students (2009-2009).

The athletic teams from U of M are nicknamed Minnesota Golden Gophers, which participate in the Big Ten Conference and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in NCAA, being best known for their achievements in football, basketball, ice-hockey and wrestling.

Facts & Short history of Minneapolis

St. Paul and Minneapolis have competed ever since their founding, but somehow ended up duplicating their efforts, and as a result, The Twin Cities nickname was born. At first, to remind themselves that there were 2 different cities, around 1872, people started to use the phrase Dual Cities, which later became Twin Cities.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is considered to be the most populated urban area in Minnesota State, consisting of more than 180 townships and cities, most of the residents in Minnesota living in the Twin Cities region.
